THING ONE
STRAIGHT OUTTA GLEN RIDGE
Listening to Thing One reminds me of those nights where everything feels like it is happening really fast, and then one thing feels like it happens in slow motion. It’s all a really good time, and you need to stop for a second and appreciate the moment.
Maybe you’ll have a moment like that listening to Thing One (a band that sounds a little bit like Radio 4 or The Rapture, which is always welcome in my ears) or even seeing them this May in Brooklyn.
All this week, you can download free acoustic covers from The Static Jacks:
Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (Nina Simone)

SUREFIRE BROADCAST
STRAIGHT OUTTA HAMMONTON
I don’t think I will ever get tired of fuzzy, lo-fi indiepop bands. That’s probably because a lot of them are really good at what they do. One of them is Surefire Broadcast. If you like anything from Yo La Tengo to Black Tambourine to The Smiths, you will probably like this band, too.
Due to their proximity to Philadelphia, they seem to spend most of their time there, and you can catch them there on Saturday! Do yourself a huge favor, and go see them.
PISCOPOINTS:
- Dälek has a new album out now, with mp3s on BrooklynVegan
- The Static Jacks sign to RCRDLBL
- Real Estate on Pitchfork
- WFMU’s Cherry Blossom Clinic with Terre T hosts A.C. Newman on Saturday
- Frat Dad has a new song on MySpace on MySpace
- Memory Cassette also has new music up
- Philly Boy Roy crushed, Newbridge Mayubenatorial Inaguration postponed
CHANNEL ZERO
STRAIGHT OUTTA SOUTH ORANGE & MAPLEWOOD
On Channel Zero’s MySpace profile, they urge listeners to “walk through snow with us.” BE WARNED: If walking through snow with Channel Zero is anything like their music, you will be stomping, you will get snow in your boots and you die from frostbite. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Actually, you won’t be able to, corpsey.
TREVOR FAUROT
STRAIGHT OUTTA NUTLEY
You can tell that Trevor Faurot is a big Radiohead fan by listening to his music. That’s not a bad thing, though. Some of Faurot’s music leans more towards the minimalism and experimentalism, using eerie samples and noises that I would imagine hearing a lot in a submarine. Other songs sound very personal, and would make for good rainy day listening.
THOMAS FRANCIS TAKES HIS CHANCES
STRAIGHT OUTTA SOMEWHERE
Experimental electrogypsy/victorian anti-folk artrock? No, that doesn’t work.
Armed with trumpets, accordions, guitars, cellos, beer and keytars, trying to describe Thomas Francis Takes His Chances is like explaining G.G. Allin to your near-deaf grandmother. So, I’ll go the wimpy route and just urge you to check them out for yourself. Why should I do all the work?
Maybe you should get off your ass and see them in their upcoming dates in Pennsylvania and Keansburg, NJ. Do something for a change, you leech.
LITTLE LUNGS
STRAIGHT OUTTA NEW BRUNSWICK
With comparisons to Sleater-Kinney, the Archers of Loaf, and Pavement being thrown around, these kids got sometin’ goin’ on! And one listen to them vocals, and you’ll realize those lungs are nuttin’ but little! You can see Little Lungs live in boogie-woogie Brooklyn, or be a part of magic at the New Brunswick 3 Day Weekend!
I wrote that post as if my uncle were writing it. Still, they’re pretty good and their album is available in Japan for whatever that’s worth.
New Jersey’s own Ted Leo, covering New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen
To hear some of Ted Leo’s thoughts about Bruuuce, or to hear from Brian Fallon from New Jersey’s own Gaslight Anthem covering The Boss, check out Pitchfork.
LITTLE CITY FIRES
STRAIGHT OUTTA RIDGEWOOD
Little City Fires songs feature swelling fuzzy guitars, echoing vocals and catchy songwriting. The sort of music that can turn a bad day into a good day during the course of a song or two. Catch the band at the end of the month at Don Hill’s in New York, or this March in Mahwah.
DC SNIPERS
STRAIGHT OUT OF ALL OVER
DC Snipers are a genre-jumping, stage-humping hell-of-a-good-time. (I’m not entirely sure they actually hump the stage, though.) They make a mix of punk and new wave and no songs overstay their welcome. My personal favorite has to be the anthemic “All Humans are Garbage” which I sing to myself quietly while walking through the mall.
They’re currently on haitus which sucks. All humans are garbage, people. All humans are garbage. Except for this fellow:
SISTER WAIZE
STRAIGHT OUTTA COLONIA
Sister Waize is a guy named Daav, who makes some nifty-ass electronic music. These songs would be perfect for the climax of some sort of sports-related movie from the 80’s. I love the unobtrusive use of the samples here, too.
Download the entire discography of Sister Waize at his MySpace and see his nifty little live show on January 24th in Harrison. Check out this skate video from something called “the GnarBQ” that features Waize’s music.
