NOTE: In lieu of a proper review, I’m using this space to rant. For a better take on the Vivian Girls, see BrooklynVegan’s numerous posts.
I’ve been having trouble seeing the Vivian Girls. Over the course of 2008, I kept saying to myself, “I’ve got to see this band,” but things kept coming up. Finally I was all set to see them at CMJ, but had to leave before their late set due to NJTransit’s shitty schedule. Next time, I’m taking the PATH.
So, I was all set to see them last week at the Loft in New Brunswick, until a day before, when I learned that the New Brunswick Police Department wouldn’t allow the all-ages show to take place there. The landlord got this message:  “It has been brought to the attention of the New Brunswick Police Department that an illegal assembly of dangerous proportions is scheduled to occur this Sunday, January 4th. In the event that this concert is held, NBPD are prepared to respond with S.W.A.T. force.” The show was moved to the Court Tavern, and became a 21+ show. I am 20. I turn 21 in less than two months.
So, I am planning to see them in Hoboken, when they play at Maxwell’s with Titus Andronicus and Spider Bags. Stay tuned to see what prevents me from seeing them this time.
